Netflix - Adding A Recommendation Feature
Introduction
My project was to add a feature to an existing design. I conducted research and found that users enjoyed to watch with and see what their loved ones are watching. I added a feature that would help users find out what to watch next, lets you see what your loved ones watched and what they recommend. As well as letting you watch movies/shows together. I worked in the role of a UI/UX designer as a student in UXA Designlab.
Research
I first did a competitor feature analysis research to get a better understanding of the topic. Then I continued my research by conducting interviews. Some questions I asked were “What feature do you wish Netflix had? And why?” And “What are your likes and dislikes about Netflix?” I synthesized my research with an affinity map where I learned about different users and their desires.

I decided to then create a user persona to understand who I’m designing for more clearly. Now with a clear user in mind I created a sitemap.

Design
Knowing what I wanted to add in mind, I then created basic sketches and wireframes. My favorite part of the design process was creating the low & hi-fidelity wireframes. I enjoyed seeing it come all together. I enjoyed finding a problem to then creating a solution.

Test
With my hi-fidelity wireframes done, I then created a prototype. I ran a usability test to test my design. The insight from testing contributed to my final designs by the feedback I got, I got to iterate and improve my designs.

Reflection
With my iterative approach I learned my hypothesis was correct and that users enjoyed to watch with and see what their loved ones are watching. A challenge I faced at the beginning of my project was that I wanted to create something new and innovative. After talking to my mentor she reassured me that it's ok not create that because what’s important is to show what my thought process and design process I took. In this project I learned the different features each site has to offer, the importance to ask questions around usability in a usability testing, and the significance of continuously iterating my designs with the feedback I got.
